Top 6 Fool-Proof Steps to Make More Money With Your Website

. March 28, 2009 .

Every website has a bunch of web pages which get more search traffic than others. These pages are constantly visited daily by new visitors, people who have never seen the site in question before. I call these ‘money pages’ because they are a reliable source of immediate and future income.

But they’re not just ‘money’ because they bring in revenue: they are one of the easiest ways to grow your audience without much work. If you learn how to optimize these money pages (its not hard to do), you’ll really improve your website in so many ways. More revenue, more members, more influence and authority. Doesn’t that sound good?

I’ve talked very briefly about money pages in my previous post on analyzing your site visitors and decided to expand a little more on this topic because I think its often overlooked by webmasters. We’re always focused on creating new content and getting new visitors to these new pages that we forget about what’s going on in other parts of our website.

This is tailored towards content publishers and bloggers but the main strategies here apply to other site types as well, you just need to find the right tools to do it. So lets get started.

How to Optimize Your Money Pages

There are many things you can do to money pages, in order to make them better or more profitable. It’s important to decide the extent of your work according to your goals and resources. How much time do you want to spend and what’s most important to you? Do you want a bigger readership? Or are you just concerned with increasing your daily revenue?

Here are a list of things you can do for your money pages:

  1. Monetize. The aim here is to get more revenue out of each page. There are various ways to achieve this and they generally involve the placement of ads both around and within content. There is also an indirect future revenue from lead capturing.
  2. Capture Leads. The money page is optimized to encourage a visitor to subscribe to your mailing list, site feed or register for your website. The main aim is to find a way to continue to reach your visitors after they leave your money page. This helps to grow your site audience and is also a component of revenue generation.
  3. Improve Relevance. This involves revamping the money page in order to provide up-to-date information or better content in order to accommodate visitor needs. This provides an improved user experience for all and can result a host of benefits like more referral/citation links and greater visitor loyalty/trust. Relevance is also important when your main goal is to capture leads or increase revenue.
  4. Make it Rank Better. Doing on-site and off-site optmization will help specific money pages to rank better on the search engine result pages, hence driving more traffic back to your site. This increases your site reach and revenue at the same time.

Step 1: Find Your Money Pages

monetize

Open up the web analytics program you’re using for your website. There should be a section which reveals which pages have the highest unique views per month. Extract the urls for the top 10 pages and put them somewhere for easy access. Or bookmark them on your browser. If you don’t currently use an analytics tool, I recommend setting up Google Analytics.

How many pages you choose to optimize really depends on your website and preference. If you have a lot of webpages that get solid traffic, you can do more. If you don’t have many pages that get web traffic, then you have a lesser amount to work with. I like to focus on the top 10 because if its a manageable amount of work for an acceptable returns on investment.

My personal guideline is to only work on pages with a minimum of 200 unique views everyday. It’s a basic number that’s good for some decent conversions. Adjust this figure to something you can work with, if your website is new or gets less overall traffic.

The point to remember is that not every page is hot. The goal is not to optimize every single web page you have. There has to be a limit. So learn to prioritize and work only on the pages that are currently receiving the most traffic to your website.

Step 2: Improving Content Relevance

relevant-content

Visitor search queries reveal what people are looking for and what they want to get from your web page. It tells you what information they expect and is a way to understand their desires or needs. Many are ready to pay for a solution or subscribe to get knowledge in their inbox.

Better relevance = better conversions. It’s that simple. By making your website as relevant as possible to search queries, you’re making visitors more likely to stick around, opt-in or buy. Users are going to click away if they find that your web page doesn’t fulfill their info needs. So the first step is closely examine your money pages in relation to search traffic terms.

My goal is to include every search query in my money page. Every question typed into search engines by visitors who access my site must be answered. One very easy and quick way to do this is to add a simple FAQ to the page to address the visitor’s specific needs. Just phrase the same exact search query as a question. Then write an answer which responds to it.

Another method for search query relevance is to create new content and insert it into the money page. It’s important to edit your pages so that it doesn’t display content that is simply outdated or useless. You’re not going to presell anyone with stuff like that. It won’t work.

Either rewrite the entire money page or include update notes specifying new information and linking to other pages on your website with newer content. Whenever new information or changes occur due to changes, go back into the money page to make necessary adjustments. This is one reason why I asked you to keep those 10 URLs bookmarked or easily accessible.

Note that by increasing your money page’s relevance and informational value, you are also increasing its linkability: People are more likely to link to it because it is a detailed and useful reference page on the topic. Whenever possible, I try to fashion my money pages on blogs after Wikipedia in terms of comprehensiveness.

Step 3: Monetizing Your Money Page

money-optimize

While you can monetize your money page and capture leads at the same time, I find it better to optimize for one goal instead of trying to achieve both. Because when it comes to monetization, captured leads are usually a good source for long term income anyway.

There are formats for each goal (monetize or lead capture) and you’ll get better results if you either choose to monetize fully or go all out to hook your visitors by making them sign up or subscribe to your website. If you put up too many well blended ads, the visitor can easily click away instead of subscribing to your newsletter, so either pick one goal or balance both.

Let’s talk about monetization first. This is easy if you’re using ad networks like Google Adsense. Go to your money page and insert an additional ad unit, blend it well with your content and make sure that its quite visible while not being too obtrusive.

A well placed Adsense unit can really increase your overall daily income. I’ve seen a jump of more than $20 a day for a site that I own when I took the time to test and optimize a few money pages. While you may have default ads already on every page of your site (sidebars, header etc), these may not be truly optimized for a money page.

Money pages need to be treated differently from the other pages on your website. They’re the ones that bring a lot of visitors (big sample size) so you can really use this opportunity to test the profitability of specific ad schemes. You can even remove the default ads specifically for this page so you have more room to experiment. That’s what I do for some sites.

Other ways to monetize include the use of commission-based affiliate programs which range from digital products to established eCommerce retailers like Amazon.com. Clickbank is a digital product marketplace you can use. Sign up, search through the marketplace for a product, grab your affiliate link, insert it on your money page.

You can also try CPA networks with relevant pay-per-lead or pay-per-sale programs. Commonly used CPA networks are Market Leverage, Max Bounty, NeverBlue, PepperJam, Copeac, Azoogle and Hydra Network, among many others. Affiliate programs can work well but remember to keep them related to your content.

Alternatively, you can promote your own products on your money page by including a short pitch for it and linking to a proper sales page. Or you can try to sell your visitors away from the money page by getting them to first subscribe to an email list. This brings us to the next step.

Step 4: Optimizing to Capture Leads

free-offer

The goal is to capture not just the email of the visitor but his/her permission to allow you to reach them away from your website. For some of you, you want visitors to subscribe to your RSS feed so they’ll continue to read your content or hopefully participate on your site.

Many set up email lists and auto-responders with the aim of eventually monetizing by selling their own products or recommending those of JV partners. Their aim here is to get users to opt-in to receive newsletters or special offers. The same goes for online retail stores.

Good email marketing providers are Aweber and GetResponse, both of which charge a monthly fee that you should be able to earn back easily. There are free alternatives available but you’ll often lose out in terms of features. If this doesn’t bother you, you could try starting with any of the free email software or plugins available.

To optimize a money page to capture leads, you’ll need to do some offer customization. Look at what content/product is on the page and create a specific offer that’s relevant to it. Provide an incentive for someone to sign up: perhaps a free digital product with related or more in-depth information. Or simply the promise of future discounts or special product offers.

To get into the mind of the visitor and understand what entices them, you’ll need to go back to the search queries you’re getting. If someone is interested in ‘what causes wrinkles’, you’ll know they’ll be interested in an ebook on natural anti-aging remedies. Do up a free guide and offer it to them only if they register as a member or sign up to your email list.

How about lead capture for communities and membership sites? Apart from providing incentives you can use teasers. Restrict visitor actions by only allowing them to view a limited amount of content or interact in a limited fashion. This limit will be removed when a user registers with your community. These are methods commonly practiced by paid membership sites, forums and social media sites to entice signups.

Step 5: Sending Internal Traffic to Your Money Pages

traffic

Now that you’ve optimized your money pages for maximum conversions, you can also send over visitors from other pages of your site. You’ve already done the work to make the pages incredibly relevant and usable, they shouldn’t just be seen by search engine visitors.

If your money pages are related, by sure to interlink each one so that each visitor is funneled to another optimized page. This not only improves your bounce rate but makes sure that each visitor is given two opportunities to convert if they aren’t persuaded the first time around.

Another method is to use a script to autolink specific anchor keywords or phrases on your entire site to the specific web page. This helps with SEO and is very easy way to get more eyes on your money page. If you’re using Wordpress, try the Internal Link Building plugin or the SEO Smart Links plugin. Both help to auto-link keywords on every page of your blog. There are quite a few similar plugins out there but these two work well for me.

If you’re a blogger producing content daily, endeavor to link to the money pages whenever it’s pertinent to your post because you’re driving traffic to pages that will perform well. Alternate the links to each money page so your audience won’t get sick of seeing them all the time.

There is an alternative way to highlight your money pages: Group the ones about a similar topic together and list them all in a reference page, which will funnel traffic out to different locations. Instead of linking to each individual money page, you can just link or promote the reference page, which will then direct the visitors you get to each money page simultaneously.

A simple example of this is my reference page on social media marketing, which collects both money pages and less visited pages together under a specific theme. There’s also the option of creating special banner ads or images to link to either your money page or the reference page, it doesn’t always have to be promoted in the form of a link within content.

Step 6: Improving Your Search Engine Ranking

search-engine-ranking

This is the final step in the process and should always come after you’ve optimized your money pages for maximum results and set up a method to promote it internally on your site. After you’ve done all that, it’s time to look at boosting a major factor for earning more money: your website’s ranking on the search engine results pages (SERPs).

This is an optional step because if you’re getting a lot of visitors, you’re should already be ranking quite well. But if you’re on the second page of Google or not yet in the top 3 queries for a keyword/phrase that is sending you a good amount of traffic, why not bump it up and get even more visitors per day?

You’ve already got your list of top money pages based on search queries. Now you should find what these pages are ranking for, which is something you can easily discover through your stats trackers. If you’re already using it, Google Webmaster Central is a free tool that shows you the top 20 search queries visitors use to reach your site.

Off-Site Search Engine Optimization

SEO is a pretty big topic: its hard to cover everything that needs to be done so I’m going to simplify it into one fool proof method of improving your search engine rank for Google. This is something that is unanimously agreed upon by everyone.

All you need to do is get links from other sites, especially with the specific anchor text you are trying to rank for. But not just from anywhere. You want links from quality, relevant websites.

Let’s see what Google itself says about ranking:

Sites’ positions in our search results are determined based on a number of factors designed to provide end-users with helpful, accurate search results. In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.

One more. From Google’s warning on link schemes:

Your site’s ranking in Google search results is partly based on analysis of those sites that link to you. The quantity, quality, and relevance of links count towards your rating. The sites that link to you can provide context about the subject matter of your site, and can indicate its quality and popularity.

It is not only the number of links you have pointing to your site that matters, but also the quality and relevance of those links. Creating good content pays off: Links are usually editorial votes given by choice, and the buzzing blogger community can be an excellent place to generate interest.

Links matter a lot because Google’s algorithm is set up to use the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page’s importance. High quality links boost the trust, relevance and authority of your web page. This is somewhat the same for search engines like Yahoo or Live.

Ideally, the best type of links you can get are from the websites that are already ranking well for the keyword or phrase you are targeting. But these links might not be easy to acquire, since you’re likely to be viewed as a competitor and a threat.

So, what I personally like to do is to do some research on the people ranking for your keyword/phrase on the first two pages. Dig into their backinks by using something like Yahoo Site Explorer and find out who is linking to them. Try to get those same links if possible and even more quality links that your competitors don’t have.

There are many ways to build links, some are blackhat and others are more compliant with search engine guidelines. As I’ve mentioned in my previous post on long term social media marketing, I favor the strategy of creating valuable services, tools and content in order to attract links from bloggers. It’s stable and works extremely well for every niche out there.

If your money page is optimized for relevance and is high on informational value, it is already a potential link magnet. So here’s something you can do immediately. Send email pitches about your money page to relevant blogs. If you contact 1,000 blogs, you might easily get 50 to 100 extra Black links (or more), which may be enough for you to outrank other websites. Sometimes all you need to do is to get the word out.

And there are many other ways. Article directories. Blog/web directories. Social bookmarking websites. Social news sites. Social media communities (Flickr, Youtube etc). Contests. Link exchanges. Blog comments and carnivals. Donations/sponsorships. Forums. Press Releases.

On-Site Search Engine Optimization

On top on link building, another aspect of ranking better is on-site search optimization, whereby you make your webpage compatible with search engine requirements and the specific search query you’re targeting. Google’s webmaster guidelines, Yahoo’s Webmaster Resources and Live Search’s Webmaster Center has a list of the most basic stuff you should be doing and ways for you to track your site in their search engines.

Basic pointers for on-site optimization involves having a good site architecture, where pages with similar themes are grouped together with a focus on great navigation and usability for visitors. On site-optimization also involves having your targeted keywords in the title tags and an appealing meta-description, which may affect SERP clickthrough rates. For the WP users out there, you might find this excellent guide to Wordpress SEO useful.

Other on-site factors include keyword density, which is the number of times a keyword appears compared to the total number of words in a page. And latent semantic indexing (LSI), which examines a page in relation to groups of associated words/terms used within it.

I wouldn’t worry too much about latent semantic indexing and perhaps even keyword density because a content heavy page is likely to include the associated terms and keywords naturally, because of its depth. The main point to note is to maintain a tight focus on your chosen topic and not divert too much from it in your content.

And then there’s the controversial topic of PageRank Sculpting: using the nofollow tag on internal site links to optimize the strength of specific pages, thereby enabling them to rank better in search engines. Perhaps a useful tactic, although one that isn’t quite necessary. Any possible success here partly depends on how knowledgeable you are with SEO.

On-site optimization isn’t a difficult process, as long as you have a good site architecture set up from the start and follow search-engine guidelines. The hard part is really the task of getting people with relevant/quality websites to link to your money pages.

Time for You to Do Some Work…

These are the fundamental factors involved in optimizing your money pages. After completing the first step of finding your money pages, you don’t need to work on the other steps in a sequence. As I’ve said earlier, it depends on your goals. Personally, I go through all six steps when I’m looking at money pages that receive a substantial amount of daily web traffic.

The good thing about money pages is that once you optimize them, you can just leave them alone for a while. If you’re busy every day, you might want to spend an hour during the weekend on your money pages. Or just assign them to a colleague or a member of your staff. Set aside some time to optimize them and you’ll definitely see the results.

Google algorithm update Vince favors Big Brands

.

Recently there was a rumor on the Internet that there has been a change in Google algorithm which seems to be helping big brands for ranking on major keywords. Matt Cutts, the Head of Search Quality group in Google, confirmed in the following video that the rumor was indeed true, and Google ranking algorithm update named ‘Vince’ is responsible for the sudden boost in rankings for big companies for major keywords.

As Matt Cutts explains in the video, this is not a major Google update, but just one of the over 300 changes which Google carries out a year to enhance the quality of their search results. He further explains that this change does not favor any specific brands, but rather gives a boost in rankings based on relevant criteria such as trust, authority, PageRank or reputation.
Here, you can read the complete transcript of Vince Update.

The Facts About Title Keyword Density

If you’ve done much SEO work for your website, I’m sure you’ve realized just how important it is to include the right text in the <> tag of each page.

As discussed in this article, it is a good idea to build each of your pages around its own primary keyphrase, and somehow incorporate that keyphrase into your <> tag. The question is, of course, what’s the best way to integrate it? The problem is that each search engine has its own unique answer.

MSN (aka Live.com) is generally thought to reward very high keyword density, and often grants top-five rankings to pages with 100% density in the title (that is, pages where the primary keyphrase is the only thing in the title bar).

Google, on the other hand, seems to make a point of devaluing pages on keywords that exactly match their <> tag. This measure was most likely introduced as a way to fight search engine spammers who over-optimize for a single phrase, by excessively placing it in their content, headings, and title.

Overall, you need to make an informed decision about which optimization route you want to take for each of your sites. As mentioned in the algorithm summaries, MSN is a good choice for driving short-term traffic and revenue, while Google has a lot more potential for long-term sustainable content websites.

If you want to optimize for Google, my advice would be to go for title keyword density of around 50%, and no greater than 75%. For example, if your primary keyphrase is three words long, you many wish to add another three-word phrase to your title, consisting of secondary keywords.

Guide On Article Writing : How to make outlines

.

Making outlines if a fundamental writing skill. Outlines can be useful for anything that you write including articles, essays, and research papers. Outlining is one of the most basic and first techniques taught to young writers to help them organize their thoughts and structure their arguments. Unfortunately, although outlining is one of the first skills we learn, not all people make them while writing.

The Internet has placed a new emphasis on writing. Most websites rely on the written word to get across their messages. Writers that write clear, concise, and to the point articles get rewarded. All of these reasons reinforce the need for people to gravitate to writing better by using outlines. Yet some people still do not.

Although challenging, writing could be a very rewarding career. It is indeed funny to think that some people would choose to work at some sort of menial job rather than sit down with a pen and write. Those who do write, enjoy the freedom of being able to work wherever they choose to along with unlimited potential for creativity.

Creating outlines before immediately starting to write is a good way to gather your ideas and organize your thoughts. Having a well-prepared outline makes writing go smoothly because of the prep time you already put in to carefully plan the sequence of your thoughts.

An outline serves as a framework for your article. It helps you in structuring the introduction, body and conclusion of your article. While outlining, you can and should write down just about anything that comes to your mind about your topic. The next step is to organize this collection of ideas.

Here are some tricks on how to effectively outline :

Jot down everything in your head. Do not worry about it making sense. Just go ahead and squeeze out all you can from your brain. Take all the time you need but remember you might have a deadline, so manage your time wisely.

Label your thoughts. After gathering your ideas on a subject matter, think about what would make these ideas pop out to the reader. In this stage, go for captivating words for your subtitles.
Connect the dots. You now have everything you need to start working on the article. So start on sequencing your collected thoughts and make logical sense of them.

Write a draft. This is your trial and error stage, and with practice, eventually you might end up just doing this once.

Proofread your work. A good writer always make sure that the message you want to be delivered to your readers are perfectly conveyed, which is why you need to recheck for grammatical errors and place the right punctuations in stressing out your point.

Have fun making your outlines and most importantly, enjoy writing!

Google Says Goodbye to 200 Googlers

.

Despite being an almighty company, Google was not spared by the on-going economic crisis. And no matter how much Google tries to explain that the announced lay-offs of around 200 Google employees worldwide is an offshoot of overlapping work areas - it can’t hide the fact that the ultimate reason for this lay-off is of course the economic crisis. So the affected areas will be in Google’s Sales and Marketing Division scattered worldwide. There will be around 200 employees who will be saying goodbye to their lucrative employment as a Googler. Google promises to help those who will be affected to find other employment within Google as well as give severance pays to them.

The announcement was made by Omid Kordestani, Senior VP, Global Sales and Business Development:

"So today we have informed Googlers that we plan to reduce the number of roles within our sales and marketing organizations by just under 200 globally. Making changes of this kind is never easy—and we recognize that the recession makes the timing even more difficult for the Googlers concerned. We did look at a number of different options but ultimately concluded that we had to restructure our organizations in order to improve our effectiveness and efficiency as a business. We will give each person time to try and find another position at Google, as well as outplacement support, and provide severance packages for those who leave the company. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone affected for all they have contributed to Google."

This is the second time that Google has made some measures to cut down on its manpower resources.

SEO is Changing - For better? Or For Worse?

.

It has begun (it begun a few months ago, just a little late on the blog update , Google is slowly changing the way we look at search and search engine optimization.

A few blog posts on SEOmoz speak to this directly. Here are some things to look for that lead to this conclusion.

1) On the top right of the search results, above the number in the keyword index, you will see “personilized search results” or “search results for X(X=metropolitan area).

What does this mean for you? What does this mean for SEO? Two quick throughs:

1a) Your personalized search results will show sites that Google belives you will like. So in theory, if my clients are showing up on your personalized search results, my clients will be directly infront of the people they want to be….the consumer. This is not a bad thing

1b) If geo targeted search results are appearing based on target market and demographic information, then we are in a win win! My clients might see less traffic because their not ranking in the same positions all across the nation. However, if people in Montana buy WIDGET X more than people in Washington. My client is ranking in Montana and not Washington, thats where i would want them to be anyway.

So….As Google changes….as long as your wearing your white hat i believe everything will work out for the best!

Enjoy, and more info to come on this subject.

The Gmail “Whoops” Button

. March 24, 2009 .

Recently added in the Gmail Labs, you can enable the option to “undo” an email you just sent. This is not like the AOL feature that was around 10+ years ago that actually let you retract emails sent to other AOL users, but rather this feature waits 5 seconds before actually sending the e-mail.

Gmail Undo

So after waiting 5 seconds, it will send your email. So what if you close the browser? It will still send your email even if you close the browser or navigate off the page.

Gmail e-mail sent

It’s a great safeguard if you immediately realize you sent the email to the wrong person. I have it enabled and might use it from time to time.

You can read more about it here, http://mail.google.com/mail/help/about_whatsnew.html.

Google Needs to Focus on Business

.

Google’s official blog is a great resource and a great way for them to get the word out about important news items. But, they also have other blog posts they publish that aren’t exactly on the same track.

Let’s look at the latest blog spot titled “March is for hoops.”

As a big college hoops fan, I’m pretty excited that it’s finally March. Sadly, my beloved Stanford Cardinal didn’t make it to the tourney, but as a proud Arizona native, I still root for my hometown Arizona State Sun Devils. I always go a little crazy — you might even say mad — this time of year. I fill out my bracket, wear a lot of red and gold, and get into arguments with friends of mine from the UofA. I’m a little obsessed.

If you’re like me, then I have some good news for you. We have several products that can help you follow the tournament.

  • Live scores when you search for your favorite team
  • An iGoogle gadget for following the action
  • Breaking news on all the tournament excitement on Google News
  • Local search to find a spot to watch the game

To get you started, we put together some helpful tips about using Google to keep up with the Madness. Best of luck to you and your team! Unless, of course, they’re playing ASU. ;-)

Thank you for wasting 3 minutes of my life.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge HUGE fan of college hoops and particularly March Madness, but did you really need to make an official post about this? This kind of blog post should be done on your personal blog, not on the Google blog.

Sure, I’ll even look at it from the side of “Google is personable and friendly, and real,” but at the same time, I also have to look at it that they have hundreds and thousands of subscribers that subscribe for the latest Google news, not hearing about someone’s craze over March Madness.

Sorry if this post sounds a little “rant-ish” to you, but I needed to put it out there that Google needs to focus on Google stuff, not the personal lives of their employees. This is why they have Blogger, so employees can go make their own blog.

Google Chrome Extensions

Google’s Chrome browser is still prepping for extensions. It really should have launched with extensions in the first place, along with a Mac and Linux version, but hey, life isn’t perfect and neither is Google.

Here are some excerpts about how to use extensions within Chrome.

Create a folder somewhere on your computer to contain your work. For discussion, we’ll assume the folder is located a c:\myextension, but it can be anywhere.

Inside this folder, create a text file called manifest.json and put this in it:

1.{
2. "format_version": 1,
3. "id": "00123456789ABCDEF0123456789ABCDEF0123456",
4. "version": "1.0",
5. "name": "My First Extension",
6. "description": "The first extension that I made."
7.}

Then, to launch extensions, use a command line this.

1.chrome.exe --enable-extensions --load-extension="c:\myextension"

Google’s Chrome is getting more and more serious about it’s establishment in the market.

On one of my non-tech sites, I see IE is still sitting at 63% usage and Google Chrome is up to 1.34% usage. It’s still a small market share, but it’s creeping up slowly and definitely taking a stand.

What is the number one thing I love about Chrome over IE, FF, Safari, or Opera? How fast the JavaScript engine is. It is a killer component and is definitely something that Google is pimping out as a huge feature.

PPC Search Engine Advertising

As it is sometimes difficult or almost impossible to achieve a top position in the search engines for certain keywords, one often ends up thinking "isn't
there an easier way to do this?". Well, of course there is, but it isn't free.

If you don't want to hire a professional to optimize your site for you, you can always submit your site to a PPC search engine that sells the top positions instead of selecting them with a complex algorithm. Overture is a good example of a PPC (pay-per-click) engine and it might be the best of the bunch.

Their system is relatively simple: You select a keyword and decide how much you are willing to pay for each visitor that visits your site through the search results. The more money you can cough up, the higher you will rank on the result list. The only limitation is that your site must be at least vaguely relevant to the keyword you want to bid on.

Making the most out of your money
The cost of the top position depends greatly upon the keyword you are bidding for. For example, the #1 ranking for "ecommerce" at Overture currently costs around $3 per click. At the same time, you could get the #1 position for "certified ecommerce consultant" for a mere 5 cents per click. The latter does not produce as much traffic as the former, but it is a whole lot cheaper. And if you have the time and energy to bid on a bunch of these low-traffic keywords, the combined traffic from them will add up to the level produced by a popular keyword - but at a fraction of the cost.

There are two additional benefits in bidding for the less popular terms. One, the traffic you will receive is targeted better and should result in a better clicks-per-sale rate. Two, Overture has many partners that display the top three results from Overture in their search results. It is hard to grab one of the top three places in popular keywords and still be able to make a profit, but with slightly less competitive keywords, you can get into the top three with a reasonable price and thus have your site displayed on all of the Overture partner sites as well. To find these keywords, I would recommend that you use Overture's own tool for finding keywords.

Does this mean that you should forget the keywords that already have some
people bidding for them? Absolutely not. You should bid on every keyword relevant to your site, but at the same time, you have to make sure that you will be making a profit after paying for the traffic. I recommend that you start out slowly with Overture. Investigate how much an average visitor is worth to you and then bid accordingly; the key is not to get carried away. It is better to rank 38th, get a few visitors each day and make a small profit than to rank 1st, get masses of traffic and lose money! If you feel that you aren't getting enough traffic, try to correct the situation by bidding on more keywords, not by increasing your bids so much that you won't be able to turn a profit.

Don't pay any more than you have to
When dealing with Overture or any other PPC search engine, it is also important to remember that other bidders are constantly changing their bids. If you can devote the time, checking your listings once in a while and changing your bids to suit the current situation can save you a lot of money, especially if you are bidding for terms that get searched a lot.

For example, I often see situations where the top bid is $1.20 and the second highest bid is $0.75. The guy that is bidding $1.20 in such a situation must be loaded with money, since he could achieve the same ranking with a mere $0.76 per click. I know, 44 cents isn't a lot of money, but if dozens or even hundreds of people click on the listing each day, it adds up pretty fast.

Also, remember that Overture has a minimum monthly spend of $20. If you purchase click-throughs for less than $20 on a given month, your account will be charged $20 for that month. Make sure that you're bidding on enough keywords to produce at least $20 in click-throughs per month in order to avoid paying for nothing.

My experiences with Overture have been mostly positive, and other people I've
talked to seem to agree. The only negative thing about Overture is that they have become very popular among siteowners, causing the price for a top position in certain keywords to rise. Still, even at the current prices, they (in my opinion) beat the hell out of banner advertising.

However, Overture isn't the only PPC search engine out there. Searchhound, Ah-ha and FindWhat all offer similar PPC advertising programs. Unfortunately, I have not used them so I cannot comment on their quality.

Web page design

.

Promoting a poorly built site is much like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in it with water. You'll never succeed unless you plug the holes before pouring the water in. In order for your site to 'hold water', you must succeed
in creating a good, clean web page design and interesting & original content. I will not discuss web page design in depth here, because there are plenty of other sites devoted entirely to that subject in the Net. However, I thought it might be useful to include some general suggestions on how to fine-tune your design.

Despite the fact that design can heavily affect the success of a site, I'm one of those who believe that a site rises or falls depending on its content. Jakob Nielsen's Useit.com has become very popular despite the visually unattractive design he uses. Users will forgive many design issues if the content is good, but if it's bad, no design tricks can save you. Thus, we'll take a look at creating content first before moving on to the design stuff..

Good content is essential in website promotion
When you are starting to build your site, it's important to choose a topic that you are interested in and are familiar with. If your site is about something that doesn't interest you at all or you aren't really familiar with the topic, the user can usually see it and deem your site to be worthless. Besides, building a site about a topic you're not interested in will be a pain, and updating it will be even more frustrating. But if you want your site to be popular, in addition to interesting you the site must interest other people.

If your site is about yourself, or a special topic with limited interest to the vast majority of population, it isn't going to be a big hit. So explore what people are interested in, and if you happen to be interested in the same thing, try building a site about it. A good place to find out what other people are interested in is Search Engine Watch's "What people are searching"-section.

When you have decided on the topic of your site and start to write, keep in mind that spelling is an essential part of good content. Even if your thoughts are brilliant, a bunch of typos might ruin the professional look of your site. So try to use a spell checker if possible and fix any errors you find. Also make sure that the text flows naturally and is easy to read. It is annoyingly easy to write a grammatically correct text that is nearly impossible to read - forgetting to divide it into paragraphs and use sub-headings every now and then is a good way to achieve this.

Unfortunately, creating content is unlike creating a web page design in some ways. A nice design can be used for several years, but even the best content tends to get stale after a while. You have probably stumbled upon some of those funny articles that were written in 1998 and just forgotten on the web. They might have been top-notch at the time they were written, but time has degraded them into little more than a joke.

What I'm trying to say is that static content is dead content; you should try to update old articles with new information every now and then. This rule applies to most sites, but not all - a site reviewing the newest computer hardware would probably want to archive its articles for users to browse, but there would be little sense in updating the older articles at a later date.

While this process of keeping old information up to date is important, it should not prevent you from creating completely new articles. People that regularly visit your site love to see completely new stuff, so you should try to give it to them. Don't think that the building process of your site ends when you put it on the web - think that it has only just really begun.

Polishing your web page design
As stated above, I tend to focus more on content than design, but no siteowner in their right mind should completely forget the design aspect. While a bad design might not drive away your regular visitors, provided that your content is good enough, new visitors might be so 'shocked' from a poor design that they won't even take the time to actually read your articles. I'm not going to write about issues like how to choose the best colors, or how to create nice-looking graphics. Like I pointed in the beginning of this article, there are specialized sites for that purpose. But nevertheless, let's take a look at some of the basics:

The first objective is to ensure that the users can easily and quickly access your content. If possible, you should aim for the possibility to move from one page of the site to any other page on the site with one click. I have implemented this by placing links to most of the content pages on this site to the left side of every page.

Naturally, sites that have very large amounts of pages cannot use the same method, but you should at least make sure that users don't get lost on your site. It's usually very useful to have someone other than yourself test the navigation system and give their opinion about it. I've often created navigation systems that seem to work perfectly, but later noticed that I'm the only one who knows how to use them :).

If it's broken, fix it
The second objective is to correct any broken images and links. In my opinion, broken images make a site look like a house that has two broken windows and a lawn that is never mowed - either there has been nobody to take care of it for a long time, or that someone is damn lazy.

Broken links on the other hand won't damage the visual appearance of your site, but they will make using the site a pain in the ass. Broken links within your site are a very bad mistake, and you should try to do everything in your power to prevent them from appearing. One good way to do this is to try to change the filenames of your pages as rarely as possible.

You should try to constantly keep an eye on your in-site links, but especially when you have just made changes that have required you to change the filenames of your pages. For people who have access to their site's log files, this task is a bit easier - the log file shows if some page was requested from your site but was not found, usually meaning that you have a broken link somewhere on your site.

Links to outside your site get broken more easily, since you have no control over the pages of other sites. It is understandable if your site contains some broken links to out-site material, but try to correct them as soon as you are made aware of their presence. A nice method is to use an automatic link-checker to check all links on your pages for possible broken links; there are several free programs that do this out there.

A few more hints
The third objective is not to overload your pages with stuff. Many people fill their pages with blinking banner ads (often 3 or more), several different font types and sound files. Remember not to stuff too many things on one page, because not everyone has a T3 connection at home. If it takes too long for pages to load, users will not wait, they'll leave. I'm not saying you should only have plain text, but do think before you start adding more and more stuff. Sometimes less is more!

Fourth, validate your HTML code. It ensures that your site works on all browsers and platforms. Unfortunately, it will not ensure that your web page design looks good in all screen resolutions, so I suggest you test your pages in different resolutions. A page that looks extremely good in 1024x768 might be annoying to use in 800x600.

The final thing I'd like to say is: Get someone else to look at it. There are many places on the 'Net where you can find people who are willing to look at your site and comment about it for free. The Usenet newsgroup alt.html.critique is an example of a place where users may request feedback about their site, but several others exist as well. Use them to your advantage, because it's often hard to look objectively at one's own creations. I can't count the times the advice of other people has greatly helped my design work

Website optimization Tips

When you're building a new website or completely renovating an old one, it's important to create your design in a search engine friendly way. The choices you make are going to be with you for a long time and errors will be very time-consuming to repair at a later stage.

In other parts of this site, we've looked at how to make individual pages rank well. Now, let's focus on website optimization and examine your site as a whole. We'll go over the design techniques and principles that the search engines like, but we'll also take a brief glimpse at some potential pitfalls. Welcome aboard, I hope you enjoy the trip!

Use as much text as possible

When the World Wide Web was born in the early 1990's, it was mainly a text-based medium. Sounds, images and complex animations were either very rare or completely unheard of. Not surprisingly, the first major search engines that came around a couple years later were built to classify and rank WWW pages largely based on textual content. After all, the WWW consisted of text and would continue to do so for the foreseeable future, right?

Towards the late 1990's, the web had started to change. Although the role of text was still very important, it was now common for web pages to contain large images, Flash animations and other bells and whistles. However, due to numerous technical difficulties, the search engines were unable to widen their reach beyond the world of text. While search engines that specifically search for images have been created, general-purpose engines still mostly ignore everything that is not in text.

The moral of the story is, unless your pages are built to contain a lot of text, they're unlikely to do well in most search engines. This doesn't mean that you should drop all the images from your website, but keep in mind that as far as the search engines are concerned, images, Flash animation and sounds do not exist.

Keep non-HTML code in external files

Many of today's sites use JavaScript, CSS, or both in their designs. Some of them have quite a lot of code in these languages on each of their pages and have placed it above the HTML containing the text used on the page. In terms of website optimization, this is a bad idea.

First of all, it forces the spider to wade through something that it is not at all interested in before being able to read the text. While modern spiders are probably quite well-accustomed to such unfriendly pages, it's safe to say that filling your pages with non-HTML code is more likely to hurt than to help you.
Second, the less the search engine knows what kind of CSS and JavaScript you use, the better. If your code is attached to the HTML, search engine spiders can freely read and analyze it if they want to. On the other hand, if you place your code in external files and use a robots.txt file to forbid search engines from downloading them, your code is fairly secure. Of course the search engines could still get it if they wanted to, but then they would have to both disobey your robots.txt and grab the .css or .js file, both things that they're unlikely to do.
But why would you want to keep your CSS and JavaScript away from the eyes of the search engines if you're not doing anything wrong? Well, the problem is that search engines define what is acceptable and what is not, and it often seems like they have a lot of trouble making up their minds.

For example, using a JavaScript redirect is occasionally "OK, if you have a legitimate reason for doing it" and occasionally "spamming, and we'll skin you from head to toe if we catch you". The point is that it's better to be safe than sorry, because the rules change all the time.

Frames or tables - or CSS?

The layout of your website and the way it is created is another factor that can either boost or reduce your search engine success. Here at the APG site, I've decided to use a table-based layout, which is usually considered something both human visitors and search engines can appreciate. However, it is not the only method available and all of them have their pro's and con's.

Tables

Search engines generally don't have any trouble reading a table-based page, provided that the layout is not overly complex or incorrectly designed. The only serious problem arises if you wish to have a navigation menu on the left side of the screen, just like I do. Placing the menu on the left causes its contents to be displayed above the rest of the content on the page in your source code. Humans won't mind about that, but because search engines read your source code rather than what you see on the screen, this kind of arrangement may damage your ranking in them.

You see, most search engines consider the text at the very top of the page to be more important than the one at the middle. This sounds a bit odd, but it's actually a very reasonable assumption. Take a look at some of the pages on this site for example; if you begin reading from the top, it won't take long before you've got a general idea about the contents of the page. But if you start from the middle, it will take on average substantially longer to determine what subject is being discussed.

So, if your menu pushes the actual content of your page downwards in your source code, the search engine will have difficulty determining what your page is about, which might cause your ranking to drop. However, fortunately there is a solution to this problem that allows you to use tables, keep your menu on the left and please the search engines at the same time. If you plan to use tables, I recommend using the table trick.

Frames

Some like them, some hate them. Think of them what you will, but generally frames are not as search engine friendly as tables. That is not to say that its impossible to build a site that uses frames and does well in the engines, it is just harder to do than with tables.

If you already have a site that uses frames, or if you just are determined to use them, it would be a good idea to implement a few website optimization tricks to prevent some of the most common problems.

To begin with, use a noframes tag on your frameset page. In it, have a simplified version (less graphics, no Flash, no JavaScripts etc.) of the content page your frameset points to and links to all of your other content pages. By having a good NOFRAMES tag, you'll make it easier for the search engines that can't read framesets to index your pages. As an added bonus, the NOFRAMES tag enables those who are using browsers that can't read frames to access your site.

However, there's another serious problem caused by frames that can't be solved with the NOFRAMES tag. Usually, a typical design that uses frames has the site navigation in one frame and the content in another. After submitting your content pages to the search engines, they will eventually be indexed and hopefully start receiving visitors. The trouble is that when someone arrives directly to one of the content pages, the navigation frame will not load. This can deter visitors from venturing further to your site and thus reduce the usefulness of the traffic sent to you by the search engines.

While this is a difficult situation, there are things you can do to correct it. The simplest of them is to install the following JavaScript to all of your content pages:

As long as you remember to place the name of your frameset page into the script, you can get it to work simply by cut 'n pasting it to between the "<"head">" and tags in your HTML. However, as mentioned above, it would be best to spend some extra time and place the script in an external file instead.
So, what will the script do? Quite simply, it'll check whether the frameset is loaded and if not, it will load it. This will give the visitors who arrive directly to your content pages the opportunity to see your navigation menu and thus browse your site. Sounds great, right?

Unfortunately, the script is not as good as it seems. If you point it to your entry frameset page, you'll notice that while it loads the navigation, it will also load your homepage. You've given the visitor a possibility to navigate your site, but in turn, you're redirecting him to a page that might be completely different from the one he found in the search engine. This is in my opinion better than doing nothing, but it is still a very unsatisfactory solution.

Luckily, there are some more refined ways of handling the issue with JavaScript. They'll require a bit more effort and skill, but can deliver both the navigation menu and the correct page to the user at the same time. While these scripts have their own problems, such as not being 100% valid HTML code, they're far superior to any other solutions I've seen. So, if you're using frames and want to offer a satisfying experience to those of your users who arrive through the search engines, using them instead of that simple script I showed you is really the way to go.

To sum it up, by implementing the above suggestions, you can create frame-based sites that get along with search engines a lot better than they would normally do. They won't be perfect, but what in this world really is?
Cascading Style Sheets

Search engine-wise, using CSS to create your layout is probably the best possible solution. In addition to being more flexible than frames and tables, CSS also gives you the possibility to easily arrange your source code. This is a helpful ability, because you can use it to ensure that the spiders always read the most important and well-optimized content on the page first without having to make changes to the layout itself.

Even though it has many excellent properties, it feels like a CSS layout is a bit ahead of its time at the moment. While it is completely possible to implement, it will cause problems with older browsers, for example with Netscape Navigator 4. CSS is likely to ultimately become the layout method of choice, but for now it is still better to stick with tables.

Avoid non-HTML filetypes

Due to the great success of Adobe's Acrobat and Microsoft's Word and Excel, many sites now make parts of their content available in files created with these programs. While this may be the fastest and easiest way to post content on the Web, it can make getting your information listed on the search engines very difficult.

Although the search engines are continuously becoming better in their task of finding and indexing information, most of them can't read .PDF (Acrobat), .DOC (Word) or .XLS (Excel) files. Google is ahead of the rest in this area, as it supports all of these filetypes. Another major player, FAST, is able to index .PDF's, but not Word or Excel documents. If you want your file to be found on the rest of the engines, you're going to have to stick with HTML.
However, it must also be noted that even plain old HTML pages may cause trouble with search engines if they are generated dynamically, for example with a CGI script. There are several good ways of taking care of these problems without having to sacrifice the flexibility of generating HTML dynamically, but it's important to be aware that they do exist.

Conclusion

In order to get your pages listed at the search engines and get them to rank well, you'll have to do more than just add META tags and get a couple of links to point to your site. By designing and constructing your site correctly, you're building a solid foundation on which is it possible to apply various optimization techniques in the future.

Changing an existing site structure to one that works better with the search engines can feel like a large task, and it often is one. However, if you're planning to make improvements, it's better to start your website optimization project as quickly as possible. Sites tend to become larger and more complex with age, so the job is unlikely to get any smaller as time passes.
