55 Quick Top SEO Tips

. March 14, 2009 .

Everyone loves a good tip, right? Here are 55 quick tips for search engine optimization that even your mother could use to get cooking. Well, not my mother, but you get my point. Most folks with some web design and beginner SEO knowledge should be able to take these to the bank without any problem.

1. If you absolutely MUST use Java script drop down menus, image maps or image links, be sure to put text links somewhere on the page for the spiders to follow.

2. Content is king, so be sure to have good, well-written and unique content that will focus on your primary keyword or keyword phrase.

3. If content is king, then links are queen. Build a network of quality backlinks using your keyword phrase as the link. Remember, if there is no good, logical reason for that site to link to you, you don’t want the link.

4. Don’t be obsessed with PageRank. It is just one isty bitsy part of the ranking algorithm. A site with lower PR can actually outrank one with a higher PR.

5. Be sure you have a unique, keyword focused Title tag on every page of your site. And, if you MUST have the name of your company in it, put it at the end. Unless you are a major brand name that is a household name, your business name will probably get few searches.

6. Fresh content can help improve your rankings. Add new, useful content to your pages on a regular basis. Content freshness adds relevancy to your site in the eyes of the search engines.

7. Be sure links to your site and within your site use your keyword phrase. In other words, if your target is “blue widgets” then link to “blue widgets” instead of a “Click here” link.

8. Focus on search phrases, not single keywords, and put your location in your text (“our Palm Springs store” not “our store”) to help you get found in local searches.

9. Don’t design your web site without considering SEO. Make sure your web designer understands your expectations for organic SEO. Doing a retrofit on your shiny new Flash-based site after it is built won’t cut it. Spiders can crawl text, not Flash or images.

10. Use keywords and keyword phrases appropriately in text links, image ALT attributes and even your domain name.

11. Check for canonicalization issues - www and non-www domains. Decide which you want to use and 301 redirect the other to it. In other words, if http://www.domain.com is your preference, then http://domain.com should redirect to it.

12. Check the link to your home page throughout your site. Is index.html appended to your domain name? If so, you’re splitting your links. Outside links go to http://www.domain.com and internal links go to http://www.domain.com/index.html.

Ditch the index.html or default.php or whatever the page is and always link back to your domain.

13. Frames, Flash and AJAX all share a common problem - you can’t link to a single page. It’s either all or nothing. Don’t use Frames at all and use Flash and AJAX sparingly for best SEO results.

14. Your URL file extension doesn’t matter. You can use .html, .htm, .asp, .php, etc. and it won’t make a difference as far as your SEO is concerned.

15. Got a new web site you want spidered? Submitting through Google’s regular submission form can take weeks. The quickest way to get your site spidered is by getting a link to it through another quality site.

16. If your site content doesn’t change often, your site needs a blog because search spiders like fresh text. Blog at least three time a week with good, fresh content to feed those little crawlers.

17. When link building, think quality, not quantity. One single, good, authoritative link can do a lot more for you than a dozen poor quality links, which can actually hurt you.

18. Search engines want natural language content. Don’t try to stuff your text with keywords. It won’t work. Search engines look at how many times a term is in your content and if it is abnormally high, will count this against you rather than for you.

19. Not only should your links use keyword anchor text, but the text around the links should also be related to your keywords. In other words, surround the link with descriptive text.

20. If you are on a shared server, do a blacklist check to be sure you’re not on a proxy with a spammer or banned site. Their negative notoriety could affect your own rankings.

21. Be aware that by using services that block domain ownership information when you register a domain, Google might see you as a potential spammer.
22. When optimizing your blog posts, optimize your post title tag independently from your blog title.

23. The bottom line in SEO is Text, Links, Popularity and Reputation.
24. Make sure your site is easy to use. This can influence your link building ability and popularity and, thus, your ranking.

25. Give link love, Get link love. Don’t be stingy with linking out. That will encourage others to link to you.

26. Search engines like unique content that is also quality content. There can be a difference between unique content and quality content. Make sure your content is both.

27. If you absolutely MUST have your main page as a splash page that is all Flash or one big image, place text and navigation links below the fold.

28. Some of your most valuable links might not appear in web sites at all but be in the form of e-mail communications such as newletters and zines.

29. You get NOTHING from paid links except a few clicks unless the links are embedded in body text and NOT obvious sponsored links.

30. Links from .edu domains are given nice weight by the search engines. Run a search for possible non-profit .edu sites that are looking for sponsors.

31. Give them something to talk about. Linkbaiting is simply good content.

32. Give each page a focus on a single keyword phrase. Don’t try to optimize the page for several keywords at once.

33. SEO is useless if you have a weak or non-existent call to action. Make sure your call to action is clear and present.

34. SEO is not a one-shot process. The search landscape changes daily, so expect to work on your optimization daily.

35. Cater to influential bloggers and authority sites who might link to you, your images, videos, podcasts, etc. or ask to reprint your content.

36. Get the owner or CEO blogging. It’s priceless! CEO influence on a blog is incredible as this is the VOICE of the company. Response from the owner to reader comments will cause your credibility to skyrocket!

37. Optimize the text in your RSS feed just like you should with your posts and web pages. Use descriptive, keyword rich text in your title and description.
38. Use captions with your images. As with newspaper photos, place keyword rich captions with your images.

39. Pay attention to the context surrounding your images. Images can rank based on text that surrounds them on the page. Pay attention to keyword text, headings, etc.

40. You’re better off letting your site pages be found naturally by the crawler. Good global navigation and linking will serve you much better than relying only on an XML Sitemap.

41. There are two ways to NOT see Google’s Personalized Search results:
(1) Log out of Google
(2) Append &pws=0 to the end of your search URL in the search bar

42. Links (especially deep links) from a high PageRank site are golden. High PR indicates high trust, so the back links will carry more weight.

43. Use absolute links. Not only will it make your on-site link navigation less prone to problems (like links to and from https pages), but if someone scrapes your content, you’ll get backlink juice out of it.

44. See if your hosting company offers “Sticky” forwarding when moving to a new domain. This allows temporary forwarding to the new domain from the old, retaining the new URL in the address bar so that users can gradually get used to the new URL.

45. Understand social marketing. It IS part of SEO. The more you understand about sites like Digg, Yelp, del.icio.us, Facebook, etc., the better you will be able to compete in search.

46. To get the best chance for your videos to be found by the crawlers, create a video sitemap and list it in your Google Webmaster Central account.

47. Videos that show up in Google blended search results don’t just come from YouTube. Be sure to submit your videos to other quality video sites like Metacafe, AOL, MSN and Yahoo to name a few.

48. Surround video content on your pages with keyword rich text. The search engines look at surrounding content to define the usefulness of the video for the query.

49. Use the words “image” or “picture” in your photo ALT descriptions and captions. A lot of searches are for a keyword plus one of those words.

50. Enable “Enhanced image search” in your Google Webmaster Central account. Images are a big part of the new blended search results, so allowing Google to find your photos will help your SEO efforts.

51. Add viral components to your web site or blog - reviews, sharing functions, ratings, visitor comments, etc.

52. Broaden your range of services to include video, podcasts, news, social content and so forth. SEO is not about 10 blue links anymore.

53. When considering a link purchase or exchange, check the cache date of the page where your link will be located in Google. Search for “cache:URL” where you substitute “URL” for the actual page. The newer the cache date the better. If the page isn’t there or the cache date is more than an month old, the page isn’t worth much.

54. If you have pages on your site that are very similar (you are concerned about duplicate content issues) and you want to be sure the correct one is included in the search engines, place the URL of your preferred page in your sitemaps.

55. Check your server headers. Search for “check server header” to find free online tools for this. You want to be sure your URLs report a “200 OK” status or “301 Moved Permanently ” for redirects. If the status shows anything else, check to be sure your URLs are set up properly and used consistently throughout your site.

Hire a Strategic SEO Consultant

.

We believe that a “top ten” ranking is not good enough. Here is why.

As with most non-regulated sectors, search engine optimization has its unwritten industry standards. One of those unwritten standards is what we call “the fallacy of the top ten”. In a misguided attempt to sell their services, and then prove that they are effective, many SEO firms focus on getting as many top-ten rankings for your search terms as possible. On the surface, this seems like an effective strategy, which is why they do it. And because you, the client, can’t be expected to know any better, it makes for a great sales pitch.

It’s also baloney, and we don’t buy it. Here is why. Several studies have come out showing a wide gap between the number one ranked website and the number two ranked website. How wide a gap? One study that tracked both user eye movements and user clicks found that 42% of searchers clicked on the top-ranked site, even though most of those people had actually looked at other listings, some even scrolling down before returning to click on the top-ranked website. In that study, just eight percent of searchers clicked on the number two ranked website. Other studies since have confirmed a similar gap between the top ranked website and the second ranked website.

Here is a screenshot that shows where people typically look at a search screen. Obviously if your website shows up where people look, you stand a better chance of making a sale than if it shows up somewhere else. And that somewhere else includes the “top ten” listing so many SEO specialists brag about.

Here is an example of how this has inspired us to run a more effective SEO marketing campaign for you.

Suppose that you have 25 search terms your website is targeting. Suppose further that you rank between 6 and 10 at Google for 5 of them, but for the other 20 search terms you languish somewhere on the second, third or even lower pages of Google’s listings.

Here is what most SEO firms will do: they will try to boost the remaining 20 search terms so that they can report to you the most impressive-sounding number of top-ten rankings possible. That is where they will focus. While boosting your ranking for those 20 terms is a good thing, the focus is not.

Here is what this SEO firm will do: we will focus our primary attention on boosting further your rankings for the five search terms you already rank for in the top ten. Why, because there is more ROI (profits) for you in getting top-three billing, and way more in getting number one ranking for even one search term than getting a number nine nor ten ranking for a dozen search terms.

We could take the easy route and try to impress you…or we could take the time to help you understand how to profit best from search engine optimization and work together as a team.

Black Hat Tool - Black Hat Free Cloaking Script

.

You’re broke as a joke but want to cloak: So what can you do? How about a free cloaking script?

Let’s say you’ve used widgetbaiting or the markov chain to create 30,000 pages of unique content about bacon polenta recipes. Of course, no human surfer wants to read those pages but they are great spider food.

Well if you don’t want to use IP delivery like you’re supposed to, you can use this code to send your surfers to a sell page with text written for human consumption.

Now, this is not some unsneaky java redirect that will get you banned in the Search Engines. * If you use this code, you may get banned in some search engines.* Rather, it’s a error loophole designed for you to exploit:

Just make a page with any kind of spider food / keyword spam that you want on it and then add that line to the page.

When surfers visit the page, they will be sent to “seoblackhat.com” because the requested image file does not exist (therefore there will be an error). The spiders and search engines, on the other hand, will all see the original page.

This free cloaking script is inferior to premium cloaking software for many reasons. If you are scraping content, this method does nothing to help you get past duplicate content filters. This free cloaking code does not protect your code from surfers or your competition. Surfers will briefly see these spider food pages load. They may, in turn, report you to the search engines who could decide that using this code in the manner described is abusive. So, I would not recommended it for sites that you cannot afford to have banned.

Many high profile sites and fortune 500 companies use Cloaking to send different content to different IP addresses. But they don’t use code like this or cheesy redirect scripts - they use sophisticated cloaking software - IP delivery is the safer and preferred way to cloak. Honestly, I’ve never even heard of someone actually getting banned just for IP cloaking. I know that people do get banned for using crappy JavaScript redirects but in my opinion, getting banned for IP Cloaking is one of the great Black Hat SEO myths; it just doesn’t happen.

Black Hat Tool - XSS Security Tool

.

SEO Egghead has created a security tool to scan your web pages to check for Cross Site Scripting / HTML injection vulnerability.

It’s not designed for you to scan every site on the net. It’s more for checking select pages . . . probably because he doesn’t want his servers to assplode!

Black Hat Tool - Brainstorming for a Better, More Brandable Domain Name

.

Normally, buying and using an aged domain with existing backlinks for a new project is the best option for a webmaster. However, if you already have a sizable network of sites and tons of great contacts in the industry, you should consider selecting a name that is brandable and fits with what you are doing.

This process can pay large dividends later on when your brand name becomes synonymous with the service you offer. Plus, brainstorming doesn’t have to be a painful process – you can have fun while being productive. After all, when the game stops being fun, it’s time to find something else to do.

Take the example of Levi from boogybonbon. About a month ago, we started talking about an incredible new Keyword service he was developing.

These excerpts from our ICQ conversations should help you when you’re brainstorming about a new project:

Session Start (L3vi): Tue Aug 15 18:09:04 2006
L3vi: I’m asking a handful of friends. Got any good ideas for a keyword search service domain name? The guy at searchables.com will not sell me the domain no matter what I offer so I’m now scratching my head on something that is marketable to the point that I could standup to wordtracker or better.
QuadsZilla: consider something brandable without kw
L3vi: yeah.. that’s what I been trying..
L3vi: looking for something with word or keyword.. or something that will feel like keywords stuff. lol seo, design, marketing is easy.. this is always the pain in the ass stuff.

QuadsZilla: keywordalizer
L3vi: hmm not bad how about wordalizer.com
QuadsZilla: you could also go with something like keywordromp
QuadsZilla: wordromp
QuadsZilla: if its avail
L3vi: that sounds like a sex site. ;p LOL
QuadsZilla: = more traffic!
L3vi: how about wordzar
L3vi: wordzar.com

QuadsZilla: is that how you spell zar?
QuadsZilla: isn’t there another letter in there?
L3vi: yeah
L3vi: its tzar or also spelled ZAR
L3vi: ref dictionary.com

QuadsZilla: wordbot?
L3vi: taken
L3vi: Zar may refer to: Alternative spelling of “Tsar” was the official title of the supreme ruler in the following states. ref wikipedia

QuadsZilla: that’s what i was thinking
L3vi: that one has come back around 3 times. Larry gives a B+. I’m middle ground about it, but been spitting out domain names all day so I’m getting run down on what sounds good and what is just another word. LOL
QuadsZilla: justanotherword.com
QuadsZilla: ;p
L3vi: lol
L3vi: “[16:55] l3vi: Thebestknownblackhatkeywords.com
[16:55] l3vi: lol
[16:55] l3vi: wordtrackertookalltheotherdomains-soimstuckwiththisshit.com
[16:56] Larry: lol”

QuadsZilla: i own yembi.com
QuadsZilla: if you want that
QuadsZilla: not too descriptive
QuadsZilla: but very “2.0″
QuadsZilla: you really going to start that on a fresh domain?
L3vi: don’t know if it feels right. Ill have to sleep on that..
QuadsZilla: that’s madness
L3vi: yeah. why not. LOL built my empire from fresh domains. ;p
QuadsZilla: back in the day
QuadsZilla: how about wordtacker?
QuadsZilla: wordtackler
L3vi: I could put it on boogybonbon.com, but I don’t know how well it will hold up on my blog for a service.
QuadsZilla: wordsmacker
L3vi: I don’t want to get in any wrangles with wordtracker of copyright and C&Ds
QuadsZilla: i know. i was kidding ;)
L3vi: bbl going to go play some 360 and drink a beer. ;p get my mind off of it till I get a better idea.
QuadsZilla: you’ll think of it when you’re half drunk
L3vi: yeah then forget it. LOL

Finally, after he decided to take a break and walk away from it - it hit him:

Session Start (L3vi): Tue Aug 15 19:32:39 2006
L3vi: I did not even get down the steps. LOL I think I found it.. wordze.com
QuadsZilla: that’s GOOD!
L3vi: cool that’s 3 thumbs up.. Ill go with that. now im taking that break..

We’ve had tons of other talks about Wordze since. I finally got to take it for a spin last week and was VERY impressed with the caliber of the product.

From today’s official release:

Unlike any other keyword research service available today, Wordze.com provides users access to a whole new level of keyword research by giving users up-to-date historical and sessional data on keywords that are being search for by internet users through ISP’s or Internet Portals.

It’s head and shoulders above the other keyword research products out there and can even give you an estimate on how competitive a search phrase is with its’ patent pending “Wordrank” technology.

Black Hat tool - GDrive Now.

.

Speculation about a “G-Drive” has been around for years: A GDrive being hard disk space in the cloud, accessible from anywhere on the bullet-proof infrastructure of Google.

Articles from 2006 Claim “GDrive, Not a Rumor“. Even yesterday, we saw Internet abuzz with Google GDrive rumors.

It’s called vaporware folks. All this buzz about something that may happen someday.

But you don’t have to wait anymore; and you shouldn’t. You can have a “Gdrive” right now.

Why would you want a “Gdrive”?

It’s a Fact: Shit Happens.

In the USA In 2007 there were:

If all your physical computer property were destroyed or stolen tomorrow, would you be up shit’s creek without a paddle? Would you lose all your personal photos, videos, documents and working projects? If so, you need a bullet proof backup solution. You need a GDrive.

Now, if you could get a scalable 50 Gig “Gdrive” for around $10 / month - would you want it?

Because if you cross out the word “Google” in G-drive and fill in “GAMEY”, a “Gdrive” is already available. (GAMEY = Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Ebay, Yahoo).

About Amazon S3

From Amazon:

“Amazon S3 is storage for the Internet. It is designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers.

Amazon S3 provides a simple web services interface that can be used to store and retrieve any amount of data, at any time, from anywhere on the web. It gives any developer access to the same highly scalable, reliable, fast, inexpensive data storage infrastructure that Amazon uses to run its own global network of web sites.”

You Pay only for what you use. There is no minimum fee.

Storage is $0.150 per GB / Month
Transfer is $0.100 per GB Upstream and $0.170 per GB downstream.

When you do the math, it’s so cheap to store your date on this bullet proof service that you really can’t afford not to do it. 10 GB of storage would run you less than $2 a month.

How to Setup a GDrive Using Amazon’s S3

It’s easier than you thought.

Step 1: Sign Up For Amazon’s Amazon Simple Storage Service.

Step 2: Install the S3Fox Organizer for Amazon (S3Fox) Firefox Plugin.

Step 3: Go to Tools -> S3 Organizer and Set up an Amazon S3 account with by Naming the account and entering your Access Key and Secret Key.

Step 4: Create your first “bucket”. When you right click on the left side you will see an option for “Create Directory”. Any root level directory created will be a “bucket”.

Step 5. Double click the bucket, and start uploading. There’s even an option to sync with a folder built into s3fox.

For Video and Photos, Flickr Pro is a better bet

If you have more than 10 Gigs of personal photos and videos, Flickr Pro is probably a better backup solution for those filetypes. For $2 per month, you get unlimited transfer, unlimited storage, a nifty file interface, good privacy and sharing options, and a desktop uploader. You can even upload photos via an email attachment.

Facebook or Myspace are also worth considering for video and photo management depending on your needs. But just keeping those photos on your hard drive with a DVD backup means that you lose all those “memories” if your house burns down. How much would that suck?

People know they should back up their data. For me, $100 or less a year to have my data safe on GAMEY is a no brainer.

How much is your data worth?

Want A Higher Alexa Ranking? Here’s How . . .

.

Alexa ranking is one of the metrics people use to measure the size and traffic of a site. A better ranking will, at least in theory, make you look more popular and therefore more credible.

You probably spend a fair amount of time on at least some of your own sites. I mean, they can’t ALL suck - can they?

If so, there’s a simple, passive way you can slightly increase your Alexa rank. Toolbars, for the most part, are crap, but there is an Alexa fireforx addon, built by Alexa, that doesn’t suck that much. It’s called Alexa Sparky.

Alexa

Alexa uses the data from surfers that install this Plugin and their toolbar to determine Alexa rank. If you install this addon, you will be increasing the alexa rank of all the sites you visit.

It’s that simple. So go ahead and add this addon.

Top 10 SEO Tips

.

The practice of search engine optimization (SEO) is part science and part black art. Keeping up with what search engine algorithms deem most worthy for high page rank is ever changing and highly secretive. Aggressive SEO hacks who try to "cheat the system" may earn a web site a high rank one day, but possible banishment the next. Beware of optimizers who promise you #1 rankings; they may do more harm than good.

It's no secret that search engines (such as Google and others) like content — lots of it, fresh and steamy. The more pages you publish in your area of expertise, the more exposure you will have to the search engines (they love archived material too). And the more strategically you headline, title, metatag and link those pages, the higher they rise in rank.

While all search engines work a little differently, they all attempt to provide the best, most relevant information based on search queries. So, I guess what I'm trying to say is: Publish. And be relevant. I've had great success with client web sites scoring well on search engines by publishing pages that avoid schemes to "trick" search engines and implement the following tried-and-true tips for search engine success.

It is not hard to be barking up the wrong tree when it comes to getting search engine traffic because there is so much out of date information being circulated.
That is why it is always best to also learn many other traffic generation methods like viral marketing for example.

Not only is there out of date or invalid SEO advice getting around, there is also information which if acted upon, can result in your pages being banned.

The SEO tips below should assist the reader in forming a basic understanding of how to create human friendly web pages which are easily understood by the most popular search engines.

Know this. There are thousands of search engines but only two of them will bring you most of the traffic. They are google and yahoo. Another search engine that brings me a little traffic is msn but I do not focus too much on tactics for that engine.

Focus your attention on the engines that will bring you the most visitors first and work your way down.

Basic SEO

1. Insert keywords within the title tag so that search engine robots will know what your page is about. The title tag is located right at the top of your document within the head tags. Inserting a keyword or key phrase will greatly improve your chances of bringing targeted traffic to your site.

Make sure that the title tag contains text which a human can relate to. The text within the title tag is what shows up in a search result. Treat it like a headline.

2. Use the same keywords as anchor text to link to the page from different pages on your site. This is especially useful if your site contains many pages. The more keywords that link to a specific page the better.

3. Make sure that the text within the title tag is also within the body of the page. It is unwise to have keywords in the title tag which are not contained within the body of the page.

Adding the exact same text for your h1 tag will tell the reader who clicks on your page from a search engine result that they have clicked on the correct link and have arrived at the page where they intended to visit. Robots like this too because now there is a relation between the title of your page and the headline.

Also, sprinkle your keywords throughout your article. The most important keywords can be bolded or colored in red. A good place to do this is once or twice in the body at the top of your article and in the sub-headings.

4. Do not use the exact same title tag on every page on your website. Search engine robots might determine that all your pages are the same if all your title tags are the same. If this happens, your pages might not get indexed.

I always use the headline of my pages as the title tag to help the robots know exactly what my page is about. A good place to insert the headline is within the h1 tag. So the headline is the same as the title tag text.

5. Do not spam the description or keyword meta tag by stuffing meaningless keywords or even spend too much time on this tag. SEO pros all agree that these tags are not as important today as they once were. I just place my headline once within the keywords and description tags.

6. Do not link to link-farms or other search engine unfriendly neighborhoods.

7. Do not use doorway pages. Doorway pages are designed for robots only, not humans. Search engines like to index human friendly pages which contain content which is relevant to the search.

8. Title tags for text links. Insert the title tag within the HTML of your text link to add weight to the link and the page where the link resides. This is like the alt tag for images.

My site contains navigation menus on the left and right of the page. The menu consists of links not images. When you hover over the link with your mouse, the title of the link appears. View the source of this page to see how to add this tag to your links.

9. Describe your images with the use of the alt tag. This will help search engines that index images to find your pages and will also help readers who use text only web browsers.

10. Submit to the search engines yourself. Do not use a submission service or submission software. Doing so could get your site penalized or even banned.

Here is the submission page for google: http://www.google.com/addurl.html

Submit only once. There is no need to submit every two weeks. There is no need to submit more than one page. Robots follow links. If your site has a nice link trail, your entire site will get indexed.

My site has a nice human friendly link trail which robots follow easily. All my pages get indexed without ever submitting more than the main index page once.

Heya. I’m Jacky, the writer who’s responsible for all the material you read on this blog. Apart from managing Blogging, I’m also currently a SEOer in Guangzhou, China.

My personal interests revolve around indie rock music, anime, photography, art films, internet media and really good literature. I’ve worked as a Sales Manager and previously spent some time in various Public Relations and marketing firms.

My academic interests are rather varied: I read widely on topics such as mass communication, philosophy, sociology, political science and literary theory. I’m particularly interested in the work of Alexander Wendt, William H. Gass, Richard Rorty, Fredric Jameson, Jurgen Habermas, Amartya Sen and Noam Chomsky.

My professional interests lie in online marketing, social media, blogging and anything which results in copious amounts of money. One last thing. In case you were fooled by the numerous beguiling pictures of cute anime girls on Jacky, I’m actually a guy and not a girl.
